My background
I spent four years at a DC-based public affairs firm and then attended Harvard Business School. Following graduation, I returned to DC and entered venture capital. I eventually founded and led my own VC firm, NextGen Venture Partners, which raised hundreds of millions of dollars, invested in early-stage companies that went on to achieve billion-dollar valuations, and created a model for mutual support within a community of entrepreneurs.
Although my business had community at its core, my job felt like a lonely responsibility with heavy fundraising pressure and hiring and firing challenges. Even after selling NextGen Venture Partners and creating financial independence for my family, I had a compulsion to work that rarely turned off. I saw the same dynamic in the entrepreneurs I supported and believed that’s just how life was if you wanted to be successful.
As COVID dragged on, I began to sense that my tunnel-vision focus on professional achievement wasn’t leading to the complete life experience I wanted. I immersed myself in teachings and practices originating from around the world. I participated in ceremonies that sparked enhanced self-awareness. I found community with others seeking to grow at a personal level. My stress levels plummeted, and a deep sense of compassion emerged. A desire formed to serve the world in the best way I could imagine.
I decided to leave venture capital to coach leaders who I believe are doing important work to help humanity. It was incredibly rewarding work as I was able to use the tools I had learned to elevate my own happiness levels on their behalf. It was also deeply gratifying to see my clients find a little more peace and a little less stress, and, as a result, to shift how they worked. A decision that might have been made from a place of impatience or anger was instead made from a state of internal calm and confidence, resulting in a far better outcome for their mission.
Watching happier people make better decisions, I started to believe that the greatest impact I could make would be to help bring that same transformation to political leaders in my home city of Washington, DC, a place where critical decisions are made that affect every human being on earth.
My purpose now is to serve those who shape our politics. To create energy, inspiration, and support for their journey toward greater happiness and fulfillment. To be for them the kind of person I needed when I was building my company.
